We often describe our Christian life as a daily walk, which is an enduring example of how we dedicate every moment of every day to Christ. The good news is we walk in the light near to God which gives a guiding light and illuminates a Spiritual path to the comfort of eternal life.  To discover the true depth of this good news we need to focus on things to come. In Revelation the new heaven and the new earth are described by John:

Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”….And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it.  Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life. Revelation 21:1, 21:3, 21:23-27 (TNIV)

For believers it’s almost overwhelming to think of the day we can walk in the light of the Lord.  BUT WE ALREADY ARE!

As followers of Jesus we are literally walking in His light:

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. John 8:12 (TNIV)

Through Christ we bask in the light of the new heaven and new earth and become the avenue of redemption for God on this old earth.  Our mission is to let the light of Christ reflect from our lives so that others will follow.  In doing so we are preparing for the day when “the glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it.”  Our primary purpose is to live and build the glory and honor for God on that day.  This drives our worship, mission, and life.

It’s important to note in all of scripture there is no reference to a Christian walking in twilight, dusk, dawn, or the light of the moon.  We have two choices, darkness or light.

Those who walk in darkness are separated from God with no spiritual guidance, stumbling through the temptations of the world and in constant fear (consciously or not) of eternal death.

In his second recorded letter to the church in Corinth Paul presents tests to address the light or darkness issue.  He asks, are you striving to be righteous or wicked?   Do you find comfort in Christ or the chief of all devils (Belial)? Are you a believer in Christ or not? Are you walking in light or darkness?

He follows these tests with the familiar imagery from Revelation as the rally for those walking in the light:

For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said:
“I will live with them
and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they will be my people.”

Therefore, “Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord.  Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.”  And, “I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. 2 Corinthians 6:16-18, 7:1 (TNIV)

A final question, are you walking towards or away from that day when we will be in the very presence of God?  Walk in the light.

In him was life, and the life was the light of men.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcome it. John 1:4-5 (World English Bible)
